Journeys whether geographical, spiritual or cultural are the focus of this theme. New sensibilities, a different point of view and an appreciation of other ways all contribute to this transeendental goal. For today's physical and spiritual traveller the outcome is subtle - experiencing a shift of consciousness, a rearrangement of the psyche.
Today journeys are both inward and outward - travelling through ideas for the mind or visual feasts for the eyes. Tibet, Brazil, Cambodia and Mexico - all have their rhythm and energy. This is about travel to collect experience not banal tourism; a blend of different cultures which, like fusion music, give a new perspective; a youthful adventure to 'capture the moment'.
No one culture dominates - here an electic mix of influences create enchanting experiences. Indigenous artefacts happily co-exist with plastic innivation in multi-purpose spaces. Traditional crafts are developed into new and challenging design concepts by designers using basic and often very cheap materials, such as nylon webbing, plastic tape, knitting and rope. Youthful innovation challenges our perceptions as to what good design is or should be.
Contemporary designers such as Paola Lenti, Patricia Urquiola and the Campana brothers have adopted this relaxed and playful approach in order to create a new, spiritually enriching fusion of form, material, colour and culture. Respect is given to the poorer crafts of the people rather than to high art.
The palette perfectly captures this diverse mixture of influences; sometimes plastic, sometimes natural, sometimes chalky - it is used with a sense of joyous abandon without due concern as to whether the combinations are 'tasteful' or not. Here it is the hybrid nature of the palette that explores new territory - colours with individual associations but used in new ways to expand our experience.
As with music, the various undertones and accents allow for a very individual rhythm - one that is always alive and fresh, never predictable or reserved.
