Can bacteria survive on walls?
Bacteria can come into contact with painted surfaces via a number of ways, for example, by the deposit of dusts and fine aerosols or by human skin contact and splashes of liquids. Some bacteria can survive on dry surfaces for intervals ranging from a few hours to a few days, in rare cases months and, in the case of certain bacterial spores, even many years. However, all require free water to grow. When contaminated water impacts on a surface it gradually dries out. Clearly, during this drying period there is a pontential opportunity for any bacteria contained in the liquid to grow. This period will depend on the volume deposited, the ambient temperature and humidity present.
